Rolex GMT-Master II 16760 “Fat Lady”: the first vintage GMT-Master II

April 11, 2026

The Rolex GMT-Master II 16760 is one of the most recognizable vintage Rolex watches. Known among collectors worldwide as the “Fat Lady” and sometimes “Sophia Loren,” this model marks the beginning of a new era within the GMT-Master line. For vintage watch enthusiasts, this is a reference you simply must know.

What makes the 16760 a vintage watch?

A watch is generally considered vintage when it is more than 25 to 30 years old. The Rolex GMT-Master II 16760 was produced between 1983 and 1988, meaning each model is now over 35 years old. This makes the 16760 not only officially vintage, but also a piece of watch history with a distinct character and growing collectible value.

The Birth of the GMT-Master II

Rolex introduced the original GMT-Master in 1953, developed at the time in collaboration with Pan Am as a tool for pilots who needed to keep track of multiple time zones. In the 1980s, Rolex decided to reinvent the line, resulting in the GMT-Master II.F

The 16760 was the very first GMT-Master II. Introduced in 1983, it introduced a series of technical and aesthetic innovations that would permanently transform the entire line.

Why “Fat Lady”?

The nickname isn’t subtle, but it’s accurate. Compared to its predecessors, the 16760 has a noticeably thicker Case, a wider bezel, and larger crown guards. That extra bulk gave the watch a fuller, more confident look, and the nicknames “Fat Lady” and “Sophia Loren” quickly caught on in the international watch community.

It is precisely those striking proportions that make the 16760 so recognizable and beloved as a vintage Rolex GMT-Master.

Five Firsts of the Rolex GMT-Master II 16760

  1. The very first GMT-Master II

The 16760 wasn't just a new reference; it marked the birth of an entirely new product line. Every modern GMT-Master II, from the Pepsi to the Batman, traces its origins back to this 1983 model.

  1. The first “Coke” bezel

The 16760 introduced the iconic black-and-red bezel, which immediately earned the nickname “Coke,” as a counterpart to the well-known blue-and-red “Pepsi” bezel. The two-tone bezel has more than just aesthetic value: the black segment represents night, and the red segment represents day, allowing the wearer to immediately distinguish the time of day in the second time zone when reading the 24-hour hand.

  1. First GMT-Master with sapphire crystal

All previous GMT-Masters were fitted with acrylic glass. The 16760 was the first in the line to feature a sapphire crystal, which is significantly more scratch-resistant and durable. The magnifying lens (Cyclops) above the date window was retained. Since then, Rolex has used sapphire crystal exclusively on all its models.

  1. First GMT-Master with 18k white gold on the Dial

For the first time, the luminous hour markers were encircled by 18-karat white gold. This protects the Dial discoloration over time, a detail that Rolex has since incorporated into all its models. It also gives the 16760 a subtly luxurious look that its predecessors lack.

  1. First GMT-Master with an independent hour hand

This is perhaps the most significant technical innovation: the new Rolex Caliber 3085, developed exclusively for the 16760, made it possible to adjust the central hour hand independently of the minute and second hands. This allows travelers to set the local time by advancing the hour hand in one-hour increments without disrupting the exact time. A fundamental improvement over the original GMT-Master.

The Caliber 3085: A Turning Point in Rolex Movements

The automatic mechanical Movement 3085 Movement was developed specifically for the GMT-Master II line and was used exclusively in the 16760. The ability to set a second time zone independently Movement distinguishes this Movement from its predecessors. The Caliber 3085 was later succeeded by the Caliber 3185, but the 16760 remains the only model to feature the original.

Available exclusively in Steel, always with a Coke bezel

The 16760 was available exclusively in stainless Steel, with the black-and-red Coke bezel as the only option. There was no gold version, nor any other color combination. This exclusivity continues to contribute to the 16760’s recognizability and collectible value to this day.
